So sometimes the Facebook ads are good, um, sometimes, but I saw

that it was playing in my area and just totally grabbed a ticket

and, um, was so excited to go.

So it was, it was an awesome show.

And you know, this is the second on the ground reporting from the, from

the con, the hot concert, uh, tour.

So our first episode was Depeche Mode.

I know that there's a huge crowded house fan base.

I believe their North American tour was scheduled for, I think it was,

Spring 2023, I think it was for fall 2022.

And it got postponed, I believe, due to, the drummer I think

needing surgery or something.

So anyway, I haven't seen a whole lot of advertising other than the Facebook.

The Facebook ad that I got, I hadn't really heard about it, but it is going on

through, I think maybe even through June.

So it was in Mesa, Arizona, and so it's close to the Phoenix area,

and it's at a, it was at a theater called, the Mesa Arts Center.

I think it's the, I, I, theater don't know if I'm saying that right.

It's the first time I had ever been there.

Actually didn't even know it existed.

So, uh, they do a lot of, uh, plays and shows and that kind of thing.

So, Looking at the venue, I knew it was probably gonna be a small, intimate show.

And also, that it was probably gonna be mellow given the, that it's at a

Tammy: 00:02:52

theater and just given a crowded house.

Tammy: 00:02:56

I kind of figured, you know, this will probably be a mellow show.

Tammy: 00:02:58

I don't think anybody's gonna be standing up, uh, rocking out or anything like that.

And that's okay.

Tammy: 00:03:04

So I, I had myself prepared of, okay, it's gonna be, it's on a Wednesday night.

Be a mellow show.

Tammy: 00:03:11

I'm gonna buy a ticket, you know, up in the mezzanine level.

Tammy: 00:03:15

I figured it's, since it's a small theater, I could probably

Tammy: 00:03:18

get a good seat anywhere.

Tammy: 00:03:19

So I thought I, and I've said things on the show before about, you know,

Tammy: 00:03:27

if I wanna stand up to a song and.

Tammy: 00:03:31

Um, people behind me are yelling at me to sit down.

Tammy: 00:03:34

I really hate that.

Tammy: 00:03:35

So I thought, well, I'm gonna sit on the mezzanine level toward the back.

Tammy: 00:03:39

There weren't that many rows in the mezzanine level, so I sat in the back

Tammy: 00:03:43

with no one behind me intentionally so I could stand up if I wanted

Tammy: 00:03:46

to, and nobody would yell at me.

Tammy: 00:03:49

Sit down.

Tammy: 00:03:50

So I didn't.

Tammy: 00:03:51

Even stand up until the end.

Tammy: 00:03:53

but it was, it was great.

It was, it was a great, mellow, but very, entertaining and, I

wouldn't say it was nostalgic.

It was, it was a lot of their new material.

So it was just, Just great.

Just a great show.

Awesome, And I know for people who are, familiar with Crat House,

they're gonna know their big song.

So, um, so Cared, house has been around for a while.

They've been on several hiatus and, and were very successful in the

late eighties, um, and nineties.

So I wasn't sure what to expect.

I thought, you know, I'm a huge Neil Finn fan.

Tammy: 00:04:47

I'm a huge split ends fan, so I was just ho and I, and I'm a huge credit house fan,

Tammy: 00:04:52

but I haven't really followed their music.

Tammy: 00:04:56

In the last 15 years, I don't know how much they have released.

Tammy: 00:05:01

I'm not even sure that it's been that much.

Tammy: 00:05:04

And I wasn't aware of their new album, but I just thought, I love Neil Finn

and it was a bucket list thing for me to see him and crowded a house.

Tammy: 00:05:11

So I was going, no matter what did I, I don't typically do much

Tammy: 00:05:15

research before I go to a show cuz I just wanna go in kind of blind.

Tammy: 00:05:19

I just wanna experience it.

Tammy: 00:05:20

I just wanna see, um, especially with some of the bands that have been around

Tammy: 00:05:25

a long time, I have no idea what to expect, so I don't wanna, I don't look

Tammy: 00:05:29

at reviews, I don't look at anything.

Tammy: 00:05:31

I just go, so that's, and then when I, after I experience it, then I kind of

Tammy: 00:05:36

start reading reviews and see, and, and checking out their, their newer music.

Tammy: 00:05:41

And so that's what I did this time and I was, well, not pleasantly surprised, but.

Tammy: 00:05:48

Really kind of blown away by Neil Finn's voice is, it sounds

Tammy: 00:05:54

exactly the same as it did.

Tammy: 00:05:55

Wow.

Tammy: 00:05:56

He's 64 and his voice, I mean, my God, and just, His musicianship and

Tammy: 00:06:04

stage presidents and everything.

Tammy: 00:06:06

And very quickly, I, so let me start, start from the beginning.

Tammy: 00:06:11

the opener was Liam Finn and Liam Finn is Neil Finn's son.

Tammy: 00:06:16

And so I, I kind of knew that before, but I said, oh, okay, the opener's

Tammy: 00:06:21

Liam Finn, I bet that is Neil's son again, didn't do a lot of research,

Tammy: 00:06:25

but just sort of assumed and.

Tammy: 00:06:29

Liam Finn is freaking awesome.

Tammy: 00:06:31

Like, okay, so he's 39.

Tammy: 00:06:34

You know, I, I think, oh, look at that kid.

Tammy: 00:06:36

But he is like 39.

Tammy: 00:06:37

he comes out and he's doing a one man show wearing this.

Tammy: 00:06:42

Red looks like a circusy kind of short jacket and red pants.

Tammy: 00:06:49

And he is gotten a setup around him of, microphone, guitar,

Tammy: 00:06:53

drums, and he's just out there.

Tammy: 00:06:56

But he introduces himself over like the microphone, welcome, this

Tammy: 00:07:01

is, uh, and now it's Liam Finn.

Tammy: 00:07:03

And, and it's literally him, saying it and walking out.

Tammy: 00:07:06

Wow.

Tammy: 00:07:06

And I think he only.

Tammy: 00:07:09

Perform maybe 30 minutes, maybe you know, a handful of songs,

Tammy: 00:07:15

but was so freaking entertaining.

Tammy: 00:07:18

I'm like, just animated, and I'm like, man, what I was thinking

Tammy: 00:07:24

was like, man, this kid has balls.

Tammy: 00:07:26

He's 39 years old.

Tammy: 00:07:28

I mean, just.

Tammy: 00:07:29

His, he just was so outgoing and so, entertaining and talking to the audience

Tammy: 00:07:35

and then just randomly just, just playing.

Tammy: 00:07:38

I mean, I think some, a few of the songs were, were his songs.

Tammy: 00:07:42

He's gotten, CDs out in that kind of thing.

Tammy: 00:07:45

But he would just start playing and just go to different

Tammy: 00:07:47

instruments and I'm just like, wow.

Tammy: 00:07:50

And he sounds so much like his dad.

Tammy: 00:07:52

Oh, wow.

Tammy: 00:07:52

Like there's that, there's that tone in his voice.

Tammy: 00:07:56

That I'm like, oh yeah, that's, that's definitely his son.

Tammy: 00:07:59

So it was really, really cool.

Tammy: 00:08:02

The crowd loved him.

Tammy: 00:08:03

I loved him.

Tammy: 00:08:04

You know, we're, oh, and, and by the way, the crowd.

Tammy: 00:08:07

You know, it's an old, it's an older crowd.

Tammy: 00:08:10

I'm old, it was older than me.

Tammy: 00:08:13

And, and that was okay.

Tammy: 00:08:14

So it was mellow, but it was so fun.

Tammy: 00:08:17

It just really casual, mellow crowd.

Tammy: 00:08:20

And I was thinking, Hmm, this is gonna be interesting.

Tammy: 00:08:22

And, so when I sat down, I heard somebody, an older gentleman, again, I'm old,

Tammy: 00:08:29

older than me, not that old, whatever.

Tammy: 00:08:31

Um, and he, and he said, wow, this is really an older crowd.

Tammy: 00:08:35

And the person, oh really?

Tammy: 00:08:37

The person he was with goes, you mean like us?

Tammy: 00:08:39

And I'm like, like, I just started laughing too.

Tammy: 00:08:42

I'm like, yep, that's, that's pretty much it.

Kimberly: 00:08:44

Well, when you.

Kimberly: 00:08:45

Well, when you do the math, I mean, they were big.

Kimberly: 00:08:47

What?

Kimberly: 00:08:47

It was the eighties, right?

So, yeah, long time ago.

So we're their, we're their fan base.

And, uh, we're getting older, but we're still going out.

Yeah.

But we're still going out.

So it, it was cool like, It's, it's not a show, it's not a nostalgic show is.

Tammy: 00:09:16

So, when Crowded House came on, um, and again, I didn't do any research, so I

Tammy: 00:09:21

quickly figured out, oh, and they were talking to the audience quite a bit.

Tammy: 00:09:25

Neil Fan was addressing the audience and, you know, chatting in between songs and.

Tammy: 00:09:30

Very personable and, and I, I realized very quickly that his son, Liam, one man

Tammy: 00:09:36

show is the guitarist in the band and.

Tammy: 00:09:40

The harmonies between Neil and his son, like, my God, it, it's just stunning

Tammy: 00:09:47

because their, their tones are so alike, and that was just absolutely mesmerizing.

Tammy: 00:09:54

And then, Uh, I quickly figured out that his other son, Elroy, is the drummer.

Tammy: 00:09:59

And so after the show when I came home and did some research, I'm like, oh, okay, so

Tammy: 00:10:04

this is like a total family affair, right?

Tammy: 00:10:07

And, and what's so cool about it is, as a huge Neil fan, fan myself, to see

Tammy: 00:10:15

how freaking talented his family is.

Tammy: 00:10:19

And I just kept imagining like, God, what was it like growing up in that house?

Tammy: 00:10:23

Right.

Tammy: 00:10:23

You know, I bet there was just music.

Tammy: 00:10:25

I bet they were jamming together, and for all that talent.

Tammy: 00:10:29

And now, now to be able to tour with his sons and them to be so

Tammy: 00:10:35

good and so musical and so talented.

Tammy: 00:10:38

And I think they've got their own individual bands and have released music

Tammy: 00:10:42

on their own and that kind of thing.

Tammy: 00:10:43

But, um, it was just incredible.

Tammy: 00:10:45

So that's for me, what made the show so incredible.

Tammy: 00:10:49

And it was a, they didn't really play the hits, so to speak.

Tammy: 00:10:53

They played a few hits here and there.

Tammy: 00:10:55

It was 20 songs.

Tammy: 00:10:56

It was over two hours.

Tammy: 00:10:58

So, but it was, Just a lot of really good musicianship.

Tammy: 00:11:02

I didn't recognize a lot of the songs, a a few here and there, and I was

Tammy: 00:11:06

wondering, I, I really enjoyed it, but I was watching the crowd and I was thinking,

Tammy: 00:11:10

I wonder if this is the kind of crowd that's gonna be pissed that they're

Tammy: 00:11:14

not playing the hits Play-Doh songs.

Tammy: 00:11:17

Where are you gonna play those songs?

Tammy: 00:11:19

And there was a guy next to me in the mezzanine level, um, on

Tammy: 00:11:23

his Kindle, like, you know, like reading something on his Kindle and

Tammy: 00:11:26

then left about, not even halfway

Kimberly: 00:11:28

through, are you reading Warren Peace during this concert?

Kimberly: 00:11:31

What are you doing?

Kimberly: 00:11:32

Right?

Tammy: 00:11:32

I dunno.

Tammy: 00:11:33

So I'm like, oh, we lost one.

Tammy: 00:11:35

So I, but I didn't see anybody else.

Tammy: 00:11:38

I saw some people leaving toward the end, which is a real shame because at the end,

Tammy: 00:11:45

Is when they played a lot of the hits.

Tammy: 00:11:46

They did this medley, like when they came out for the encore, they did this medley

Tammy: 00:11:51

of, split ends and my favorite songs from Split Ends and, some of their other songs.

Tammy: 00:11:57

And I'm like, and everybody was up and clapping and, singing and

Tammy: 00:12:01

dancing and like, in some ways that was the highlight of the show.

Tammy: 00:12:05

And so if you stuck it out for the two hours, You, you saw all

Tammy: 00:12:10

that you wanted to go, you know, see the hits, um, and you left.

Tammy: 00:12:16

You really missed out.

Tammy: 00:12:17

well, you know, the hats off to them because we talked about this

Kimberly: 00:12:20

when we were reviewing the Depeche Mode concert and you know, people wanting

Kimberly: 00:12:24

to just hear those songs that they are familiar with and I think, I think that's

Kimberly: 00:12:28

a really smart move for these bands.

Kimberly: 00:12:30

It's like, show off all your talents.

Kimberly: 00:12:32

I didn't know, cause I watched clips of the show.

Kimberly: 00:12:35

I didn't know that Nil Finn played a piano and keyboard.

Kimberly: 00:12:38

I thought he was mainly a guitar player.

Kimberly: 00:12:40

So that was really nice to see.

Yeah.

Yeah, super, super musical family.

Super talented family.

Um, and the thing is, is I thought about this a lot and I thought about this from

our Depeche mode, uh, recap or, or review.

And that's, I guess that's what I was thinking of when I was.

Listening to All these songs that I didn't know but was really enjoying,

I, I was really thinking, is this the kind of crowd that's gonna be into this?

Or is this the kind of crowd?

So, and I, and I was thinking too, like there's some, there's some bands,

you know, like a Def Leopard, even Motley Cru for that matter, that will

Tammy: 00:13:18

tour and they're playing the hits.

Tammy: 00:13:20

Mm-hmm.

Tammy: 00:13:21

They're playing the hits.

Tammy: 00:13:22

They're playing the hits, and it's almost like, A tribute show.

Tammy: 00:13:26

Mm-hmm.

Tammy: 00:13:26

You know, I'm sorry, but they're not really releasing new, new music.

It's, we're gonna go play the hits.

Tammy: 00:13:31

We're gonna have some fun.

People are gonna love it.

And that's that.

These kinds of concerts, like a Depeche Mode or, or Credit house, they are,

I'm not saying that Def Leppard and Marley Crew are not artists, cuz

they are artists, but, there's a level of musicianship with someone,

like a crowded house or even even Depeche mode, and that, they're not

Tammy: 00:14:01

just gonna come out and do the hits.

Tammy: 00:14:02

It's not interesting to them.

Tammy: 00:14:04

Mm-hmm.

Tammy: 00:14:04

They're gonna come out and, and it's so funny because.

Tammy: 00:14:08

There was so much energy when they were performing what they wanted to perform.

Like they were just unstoppable and their, and the kids and the harmonies between

Tammy: 00:14:19

'em, like I I, I was just blown away.

Tammy: 00:14:23

And then they would put a, like a hits song kind of in between some of these long

Tammy: 00:14:28

things like, like a Fall at Your Feet.

I love that song.

But whenever they got to one of those, Past songs, their

energy noticeably dropped.

I was like, this isn't a very good rendition.

I can tell they're not into it.

It's not that they're not good cuz they're killing it.

It's that they got, it just, it's probably not interesting to them to

I freaking love Devo, so whoop it.

I was on, I've on a, I was on a devo kick, uh, l you know, down,

uh, warm hole the other day and just watching past interviews and,

I still love so much their music.

And I, I was looking up, it was Deebo touring anywhere cause

Tammy: 00:15:25

I, that's on my bucket list.

Debos on my bucket list.

And so I read a, a article from, um, mark.

Tammy: 00:15:33

one of the founding members and or I watched an inter interview and he said,

you know, going, he's like, going on tour is pretty tough now to get everybody to

Tammy: 00:15:43

go out because it's like, we're, they're in their sixties and he is like, it's

Tammy: 00:15:49

like performing songs that you performed.

Tammy: 00:15:52

In high school, it's like going back to high school and performing those songs.

Tammy: 00:15:57

He's like, it's just, we're just not there anymore.

Tammy: 00:16:01

You know, we've, we've evolved, passed it.

Tammy: 00:16:03

So I really understand that.

Tammy: 00:16:04

And the, for the fans, it's nostalgic and it's, we wanna

Tammy: 00:16:08

hear that and we love that song.

Tammy: 00:16:10

But for the musicians, They're playing something.

Tammy: 00:16:14

You know, this was my point with Depeche Mode in our review with Depeche Mode,

Tammy: 00:16:18

you're not gonna hear people are people, you're not gonna hear a lot of stuff

Tammy: 00:16:21

because they're not that band anymore.

Tammy: 00:16:22

Mm-hmm.

Tammy: 00:16:23

This isn't a tribute band.

Tammy: 00:16:24

This is a band that is really prolific and still running music and still evolving

Tammy: 00:16:29

as humans and artists and musicians.

Tammy: 00:16:31

They don't wanna perform that stuff.

Tammy: 00:16:33

And I really noticed that with Crowded House.

Tammy: 00:16:35

Mm-hmm.

Tammy: 00:16:35

Like when they performed their hits.

It was like, I didn't even record, I recorded one or two of them that,

that were good, but the, their newer music, they were on fire.

It was really interesting.

And then, but then again, and, you know, they, they ended their, it

was, uh, 20 songs, like I said.

And they ended with, uh, something so strong, which I loved.

You know, that song that was great.

Everyone was like singing along, that was, um, mething.

So, and that was cool.

And they were too, and it was good, you know.

Um, but so then they went out and they came back for the, and I

was thinking to myself like, oh, they should have put something so

strong, like higher up in the set.

Like they should have had more, like, this was such a sing songy good song.

Tammy: 00:17:24

You know, I wonder.

And then they came out with the encore and this whole medley, and then everything

Tammy: 00:17:30

just exploded, including the band.

Mm-hmm.

Tammy: 00:17:32

Like it energized them to, and not that they weren't energized, it was

Tammy: 00:17:36

just they weren't energized when they were playing really old songs.

Tammy: 00:17:40

Mm-hmm.

So, not that it was bad and most people probably wouldn't notice.

But I notice cuz I noticed these things.

But so you know, for their encore they played, weather With You.

I love that song.

Crowned House Chocolate Cake.
