big tour festival that's been happening.

Okay, so I attended Cruel World on Saturday, let's see, May 20th, 2023.

Tammy: 00:01:16

And, it was interesting.

Tammy: 00:01:18

It was a lot different than I thought it was gonna be.

Tammy: 00:01:21

Obviously there was a total weather thing that happened and I'll talk about that.

Tammy: 00:01:26

but first of all, when I booked the tickets for Cruel World,

Tammy: 00:01:32

there, this is the second festival.

Tammy: 00:01:34

Last year, was postponed, it actually was postponed from 2000, I think

Tammy: 00:01:40

19 or 2020 for obvious reasons.

Tammy: 00:01:43

I had tickets to that.

Tammy: 00:01:44

I couldn't make it last year.

Tammy: 00:01:45

So I've been looking forward to Cruel world since literally 2020.

Tammy: 00:01:50

And in my mind, I thought that it was going to be more eighties,

Tammy: 00:01:55

like Gen X, kind of eighties, like cool Gen X eighties.

Tammy: 00:01:59

And what I found is that it was more, it was a lot more goth than I expected.

And, so I'll talk a little more about that.

I'll walk you through the whole process.

me pictures and I did wear my Cool World Goth outfit today, just to

commemorate, you know, the experience.

But, but it was way more goth than me.

Tammy: 00:02:24

I think I had, I sent Kimberly a text, late in the day.

Tammy: 00:02:28

First of all, cell service was shit, so it's almost impossible

Tammy: 00:02:32

to get through anywhere.

Tammy: 00:02:33

And that became a problem later as well, get 5G people.

Tammy: 00:02:36

But I sent, Kimberly a text and it said, I'm in a C of Goth.

Tammy: 00:02:41

And that's really what it felt like a sea of, I get, I think the attendance

was, I heard numbers of around 37,000.

Tammy: 00:02:49

Oh, wow.

Tammy: 00:02:49

It seemed like far it, honestly, it was, I think the venue, so the venue,

Tammy: 00:02:55

it was at the Brookside Park, which is right next to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

So it's a big giant park that they set up three different stages.

Tammy: 00:03:05

I read somewhere that it was the size of four football fields to

Tammy: 00:03:08

get from one stage to another.

Tammy: 00:03:10

I believe it, it was a lot of w walking.

Tammy: 00:03:13

I was prepared for walking.

Tammy: 00:03:16

I was not prepared for the heat and it wasn't really even that hot.

Tammy: 00:03:22

But when you're in a sea of everyone wearing all black in the

Tammy: 00:03:27

sun, when it's 79 it gets hot.

Things heated up fast.

Kim: 00:03:33

Huh?

Tammy: 00:03:33

Fast.

Tammy: 00:03:34

Yeah.

Tammy: 00:03:34

you heat up fast.

Tammy: 00:03:35

there was, it is almost like there was two cruel worlds going on.

There was the cruel world, which I saw most of the goth, cruel world.

I was looking for the Gen X cruel world, but somehow I got mixed in with the

Tammy: 00:03:52

goth cruel world, I think because of the choice of bands I saw and where I

Tammy: 00:03:56

was standing and that sort of thing.

Tammy: 00:03:58

But it was really overwhelming.

Tammy: 00:04:00

So let me start from the beginning.

it took, the gates opened at noon.

Tammy: 00:04:04

It took me, I started driving to the venue about, I think it was around 1230.

First of all, I flew in that morning, so I flew in that morning to Burbank, rented

Tammy: 00:04:15

a car, went straight to the venue, sat in traffic for an hour to get parking

Tammy: 00:04:21

into the venue, which was just in this grassy area, looked like a golf course.

Tammy: 00:04:26

And, right next to the venue, got into the venue, proceeded to

Tammy: 00:04:30

get my water, get my bearings.

Tammy: 00:04:33

What was, where were the stages?

Tammy: 00:04:34

What time?

Tammy: 00:04:35

I had the map and the set list times and everything.

Tammy: 00:04:38

but it was really a lot more than I, than I anticipated.

Tammy: 00:04:44

I forgot, you know, it's been a few years since I've been to a festival and.

Tammy: 00:04:49

I forgot the amount of stamina that it takes to endure a festival.

Kim: 00:04:56

You have to train, like you're training for a

Kim: 00:04:57

marathon to go to these things.

Tammy: 00:04:59

Yeah.

Tammy: 00:05:00

You really have to pace yourself and you're dealing with elements, you're

Tammy: 00:05:05

dealing with heat, you're dealing with crowds of people, tons of people.

Tammy: 00:05:10

So I also bought, a general admission ticket and which

Tammy: 00:05:16

I'll probably never do again.

Tammy: 00:05:17

I would not go without an upgraded vi.

Tammy: 00:05:20

They have v i p and clubhouse tickets.

Tammy: 00:05:22

Where you have more, I think, more exclusive areas, but you just have

Tammy: 00:05:26

like shorter food lines, shorter merch line, you know, all of that stuff.

Tammy: 00:05:30

And you know, dedicated area.

Tammy: 00:05:32

I'm too damn old for general admission, anything with ac, the pandemic.

Tammy: 00:05:38

But damn, I got old because I was dying, like dying and I,

Tammy: 00:05:44

I wasn't the only one either.

Tammy: 00:05:45

So anyway there.

Tammy: 00:05:47

So there were two cruel worlds from what I saw.

The golf crew world and the golf crew world was a lot of young

Tammy: 00:05:54

goths, which really surprised me.

Tammy: 00:05:56

And I learned later that there were a lot of goth bands that were playing

Tammy: 00:06:01

throughout the day, that were newer bands that attracted that younger crowd.

Tammy: 00:06:06

Interesting.

Tammy: 00:06:07

I didn't expect that.

I just expected everybody to be old like me.

Tammy: 00:06:11

And, hobbling around.

Tammy: 00:06:12

I didn't expect.

The Goth fashion show, and I mean, goth fashion show, it

was like Coachella for goths.

Tammy: 00:06:24

Cruel World is the Coachella for goths.

Tammy: 00:06:27

I'm not even kidding.

Like the outfits.

Tammy: 00:06:30

And I was like, this is what I was wearing with like, you know, this shirt,

love that I was gonna do my Wednesday.

I was, this is a nod to Wednesday Adams.

So I was gonna wear, I have some really cool Wednesday shoes that I was gonna

wear, but I, when I saw the lineup that got released, a few days before the

Tammy: 00:06:51

festival I realized that I was gonna be doing a lot of hiking back and forth.

And so I went and bought some comfy sketchers, Hey, if Susie can wear

Tammy: 00:06:59

comfy shoes on stage, so can I, there was a meme going around about

Tammy: 00:07:03

that, and I'm like, whoa, man.

Tammy: 00:07:05

Well, she's wearing, you know, Steve McQueen or something, but

Tammy: 00:07:09

I'm like, no, I'm gonna, I'm gonna go for the Black Sketchers.

I'm so glad I did saying

I was dying as it was, but, so then there's the Gen X, cruel

world, but I just did, I guess it was the bands that I went to see.

I didn't see a lot of the Gen X and again, Now that I know the lay of the land from

being there once and where maybe the Gen Xers were versus the younger GOs.

Now I sort of know, I didn't know.

and quite honestly, I was just dealing with okay, you know, the heat?

The heat and the sheer stamina of walking and very little shade.

Where can I sit down?

And by sit down, I mean ass on grass.

You're sitting on the ground, not like, oh, I'm gonna go find a seat.

There are a few tinted areas, but they were packed and I'm like, I

don't really wanna go sit on a picnic table underneath, I just, it just

didn't really, so I chose grass.

I'm not sure it was the right choice.

Cause my back and my legs and my feet hurt so bad by the end of the day.

But, It is what it is.

We're, you're gonna need to sit for a while or And I know I wasn't the only

one, but still it was a rude awakening.

It was a, it was kind of a bummer.

so cruel world earned its name, Saye guy.

it was a little bit of a cruel why the name Cruel World, by the way.

And it

is, and it's funny.

So let me jump to the obvious event that happened and that it got shut down early.

So first of all, there, okay, this was during, this was

Tammy: 00:09:44

toward the end of the festival.

Tammy: 00:09:46

It was during Iggy Pop.

Tammy: 00:09:47

It was dark.

Tammy: 00:09:48

It started to, thunder and lightning.

Tammy: 00:09:50

Not a lot of people saw the lightning.

Tammy: 00:09:52

I saw the lightning because, I was sitting on the ground far back from, I

Tammy: 00:09:57

couldn't make it to the front of Iggy Pop.

Tammy: 00:09:59

I just was too damn tired.

Tammy: 00:10:01

I'm like, I've seen Iggy Pop before and I love Iggy Pop,

Tammy: 00:10:06

but I just, I couldn't do it.

Tammy: 00:10:08

I'm like, there's no way.

Tammy: 00:10:09

I was up there in front for Gary Newman and some other bands, but by

Tammy: 00:10:13

the time Aggy Pop came around at, I don't know, nine o'clock, 8 30, 8 30,

Tammy: 00:10:17

9 o'clock at night, I couldn't do it.

Tammy: 00:10:20

I'm like, there's, because I would've had to fight.

Tammy: 00:10:23

Once you get up front.

Tammy: 00:10:25

Then there's a moment where you're like, I'm, I need to get outta here.

Tammy: 00:10:28

And you turn around and there's 20,000 people behind you that you

Tammy: 00:10:32

have to kind of whittle through.

Tammy: 00:10:34

Yeah.

Tammy: 00:10:35

And, and so there's a little bit of a panic of like, uh, can I get outta here?

Tammy: 00:10:40

So I knew I wasn't gonna be able to stand for a long time during Iggy, so I'm

Tammy: 00:10:45

just like, I'm just gonna have to sit.

Tammy: 00:10:47

And, so he was only into a few songs, and I heard this, oh, this kind

Tammy: 00:10:52

of, and I was like, what happened?

Tammy: 00:10:55

And I looked over and there were a few people filming the sky.

Tammy: 00:10:59

I'm like, what the hell?

Tammy: 00:11:00

And then I s and then I saw the lightning, and I was like, oh.

Tammy: 00:11:04

And right then the sound cut out for Iggy.

Tammy: 00:11:07

Like the sound just cut out and I was like, oh shit,

Tammy: 00:11:10

they're gonna shut this down.

Tammy: 00:11:12

And every, no one noticed that.

Tammy: 00:11:14

I don't know.

Tammy: 00:11:15

I don't know if anyone was in denial.

Tammy: 00:11:17

Just didn't want, or a lot of people didn't see the lightning.

Tammy: 00:11:19

Cause if you were up close, you were watching the band,

Tammy: 00:11:22

it was off in the distance.

Tammy: 00:11:23

Of course you didn't see it.

Tammy: 00:11:24

right then I got up.

Tammy: 00:11:26

I started walking to the exit.

Tammy: 00:11:28

I'm like, fuck this.

Tammy: 00:11:31

The 50,000 people are gonna be heading for, they're going to, you

Tammy: 00:11:34

know, I just knew, I just knew.

Tammy: 00:11:37

So I started limping my way toward the exit, which was, a good two

Tammy: 00:11:42

miles away, which your walker.

Tammy: 00:11:44

And I'm like, I'm gonna go to the bathroom first, in the real bathrooms.

Tammy: 00:11:47

Not the freaking porta potty.

Tammy: 00:11:49

I'm gonna go to the real bathrooms on the way out and I'm

Tammy: 00:11:52

gonna get the hell outta here.

Tammy: 00:11:53

So that's exactly what happened.

I started, I started wheeling, limping my way out, and the human league was playing.

Tammy: 00:12:01

and I'll get to the bands and the set times and everything, cause that was

Tammy: 00:12:04

a whole other cluster, but for me.

Tammy: 00:12:07

But, human League was playing and I really wanted to see them.

Tammy: 00:12:11

But I love Iggy.

Tammy: 00:12:12

I had to make a choice.

Tammy: 00:12:14

I went to see Iggy as I was going out.

Tammy: 00:12:16

I thought, I.

Tammy: 00:12:17

human League is by the exit and I can't really remember where the exit is cuz it's

Tammy: 00:12:21

so freaking dark and there's no lights.

Tammy: 00:12:24

So I'm limping my way back past Human League.

Tammy: 00:12:27

Human League is still playing.

Tammy: 00:12:29

Iggy has cut out.

Tammy: 00:12:30

I can already hear by now that they've stopped Iggy.

Tammy: 00:12:33

And I just kept going.

Tammy: 00:12:34

I'm just like, oh, there's human league.

Tammy: 00:12:36

Okay.

Tammy: 00:12:36

I heard they're doing gr okay.

Tammy: 00:12:37

I just went right past them, went to the nearest bathroom and by the time I got out

of the bathroom, there were just lines of people leaving and I was like, oh shit.

Oh man.

Tammy: 00:12:48

So I, so fortunately, because I got there so early, and by early I mean by the

time I got parked, it was about one 30.

So my car was really close to the exit.

Somehow miraculously I was in, section F or something and there was an exit

right there and I just exited right out.

I took photos where my car was so I could find my way back.

Tammy: 00:13:14

And got in, got the hell outta there before anybody, like before

Tammy: 00:13:19

the majority of the people did.

So I was really lucky.

Like I knew, I just knew when that sound cut out and people thought it was

Tammy: 00:13:27

like, oh, I think even Iggy thought, oh, like something's wrong with the sound.

They were cutting the sound because the fire Marshall was shutting down

Tammy: 00:13:35

the festival because of the lightning.

Tammy: 00:13:37

So thank God I wasn't in the front for Iggy, because that would've, I forget it.

I would've never.

It's Iggy, I love you, but I'm not going to get struck by lightning over

people didn't know knowing what was going on.

and the announcement, you couldn't hear the announcement?

I read online someone, someone said, it sounded like they had a kid on the pa.

You could barely hear ' em that said, oh, the festival is something, and so nobody

paid attention cuz you couldn't hear it.

And no, nobody knew, but I knew, I get, I don't know, I don't know

how I knew, but I just knew, oh, they're gonna shut this shit down.

Tammy: 00:14:17

I gotta get outta here.

Tammy: 00:14:18

thank God.

Cause I heard, I read stories of people, first of all, thank God I

Tammy: 00:14:25

drove because getting an Uber, forget it in the area and you had no service.

There was no service.

Tammy: 00:14:35

So how are you gonna call, get an Uber when you can't get internet there?

Tammy: 00:14:40

And, 20,000 people trying to get an Uber at the same time or whatever.

They had shuttles.

I don't know what happened with the shuttles, but, and then the parking

lot was so dark, unmarked, no rhyme or reason, People were wandering around just

even trying to find their car for hours.

I read some guy, like Google mapped, how do I get outta here?

Basically just walking.

Tammy: 00:15:05

I think he was trying to get Uber, couldn't get an Uber.

Tammy: 00:15:07

Started walking and walked over some mountain.

Tammy: 00:15:11

So, cause it's in an area, there's nothing, you know, there's, it's,

there's nothing close by in the area.

Tammy: 00:15:17

You gotta walk a couple miles to get to any main street or anything.

Tammy: 00:15:22

So I read somebody had, you know, like Matt questioned, you

Tammy: 00:15:26

know, how do I walk outta here?

Tammy: 00:15:27

And it walked him up a mountain and then he got to the top of the mountain.

It was fenced off, so he had to turn around and walk back in the dark.

Like, I mean, just horror stories about people trying to get out there.

Tammy: 00:15:37

And I can't, I don't know.

Tammy: 00:15:39

I'm sure it took at least two hours to get at least two hours to get out of there.

For a lot of people.

So I was very happy that I got out right away.

And by then I was like, I.

I just made it to my hotel, limped into the lobby, grabbed my key and went

to my room and just like immediately took a shower and went to bed.

I was just, well, mean, I couldn't fall asleep.

I was still wired, but still, I was just like, I cannot stand or walk any longer.

Like, that's it.

I'm done, but I'm done.

little did I know that Shirley Manson from Garbage, who I love, was staying at

the same hotel and she was in the lobby having a drink, but I didn't know cuz I

Tammy: 00:16:24

was too damn tired and went to my room.

Tammy: 00:16:27

I didn't know until the next day.

Tammy: 00:16:29

I saw her Insta Stories and she was posting photos of herself

Tammy: 00:16:34

at like the lame hotel bar.

Tammy: 00:16:35

Cause the hotel was under construction, under renovation.

Tammy: 00:16:38

Under construction.

Tammy: 00:16:39

I'm like, Oh man, at my hotel, I could have had a drink with

Shirley Masson, but wasn't,

So then I think at three in the morning they sent out a, a

message over the app that said, we're gonna reschedule to Sunday.

And so this gets a lot of mixed reaction, but they rescheduled Susie,

Gary Newman, and Iggy for Sunday.

So Gary Newman, I think six o'clock, I don't know, whatever, you know, staggered

Tammy: 00:17:18

each and, and extended time for Susie.

Tammy: 00:17:22

I have no idea how they pulled that off, honestly.

Tammy: 00:17:26

as a former event planner, that's a ton of logistics to get.

Tammy: 00:17:30

All of the crew back, not only the artists, but all of the crew back.

Tammy: 00:17:35

And then they had some, I think concessions.

Tammy: 00:17:38

Not full concessions, but some concessions.

Tammy: 00:17:41

They sent everybody's ticket back to them.

Tammy: 00:17:44

They just said, use your parking's free, use your same ticket.

Tammy: 00:17:48

But a lot of people like myself were flying out Sunday morning,

so they couldn't make it.

So then they sent out a message later Sunday afternoon that said, for those

of you that can't make it, you can email us and request a partial refund.

And so I thought that was above and beyond, festivals or concerts

on the East coast in Florida.

Tammy: 00:18:11

Gets shut down all the time.

And I think it's, sorry, you're s o l So I, I've never heard of anybody doing this.

A lot of people were blaming Golden Voice, and cruel world for

Tammy: 00:18:22

shutting it down, but it wasn't them, it was the fire department.

There's nothing they could do.

Tammy: 00:18:26

So it was the, the Pasadena Fire Department that shut

Tammy: 00:18:28

down, and I don't blame 'em.

Tammy: 00:18:30

I'm in Arizona and they're, the week before we had horrific storms here, like

Tammy: 00:18:36

monsoon storms that we usually have in maybe August timeframe, but they were

Tammy: 00:18:43

last week and they, those blew in so fast.

Tammy: 00:18:47

And like thunder, lightning, the whole thing.

Tammy: 00:18:50

So, I understand like how brutal those quick storms can be.

Tammy: 00:18:55

And I'm sure a lot of people do too.

But if you're from California, you're like, what the hell?

And then it didn't rain so on top, right?

So to make it worse, a lot of people didn't see the lightning.

They were mad.

A lot of people came in to see Susie, she hadn't performed in 15

years, and this was the only North American date that she was doing.

detector but they weren't checking anybody's bags or anything like that.

I had to take a tram.

When I got off the tram, I took a photo of where the tram got off.

I took photos every, that's the first time I've really ever done that.

And thank God, because I was dead, coming back the next morning.

Dead tired, no idea where I parked, what I did.

Limping through the airport to get to my car the next morning.

And it was just cause I was completely stressed and outta my
